A portrait of American stage and film actress Kay Francis.
Born Katharine Edwina Gibbs in Oklahoma City in 1905, she adopted the surname Francis after her marriage to James Dwight Francis.
Kay Francis achieved significant success in Hollywood between 1930 and 1936, becoming the highest-paid American film actress and the number one female star at Warner Brothers studio.
Despite a mild speech impediment and relatively limited formal acting training, she rose to prominence during the Pre-Code era of filmmaking, known for her glamorous roles and sophisticated style.
Her career saw a decline after a legal dispute with Warner Bros., leading to a shift towards B-pictures, and she eventually retired from film, making appearances in summer stock theater.
Francis passed away in 1968 from breast cancer and is remembered for her contributions to classic Hollywood cinema.
